Alibaba Group to build its western base in China

Alibaba Group, China’s largest e-commerce service provider and one of the world’s largest online B2B platforms, declared on June 29 to set up its western base in Chengdu, the provincial capital of Sichuan, with an investment of US$100 million.

The new base will have the functions of R&D, call center, back office operation and maintenance, disaster-prevention backup, and training. It will be set up in the Chengdu’s Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone, and over 10,000 people will be employed.

Microsoft launches new search engine Bing

Taking its third swing at Internet search, Microsoft's Bing aims to put a ding in rival Google.

Bing.com went live Monday, and early impressions aren't entirely unfavorable. The service offers several options beyond Google's simple list of search hits. "Boy, it's not Google," seems to be the inspiration for the Bing name.
Microsoft hopes it's enough like Google, however, to attract some of its big rivals hefty search traffic. Bing follows Microsoft's MSNSearch and more recently Live as the latest effort by the software shop to loosen Google's firm grip on the Internet search market.

Facebook users get low GPA in college

College students who use Facebook have significantly lower grade point averages (GPA) than those who do not.

According to the study by doctoral candidate Aryn Karpinski of Ohio State University and her co-author Adam Duberstein of Ohio Dominican University, students who express their membership regularly to the 200-million-member social network do worse in school tests. "In fact, the majority of them who Facebook daily do worse by as much as one whole grade," said the researchers.

Karpinski said, "our study shows people who spend more time on Facebook spend less time studying. Every generation has its distractions, but I think Facebook is a unique phenomenon."

Still learning the ropes of microblogging, Oprah Winfrey posted her first tweet this morning.

In her first tweet—“HI TWITTERS . THANK YOU FOR A WARM WELCOME. FEELING REALLY 21st CENTURY”—she committed the Twitter faux pas of writing in all caps and using the wrong term for Twitter adherents, or "Tweeple.” Nonetheless, her feed already has over 130,000 followers—and the number is climbing by the second.

She posted her first tweet during her show, joined by Twitterer extraordinaire Ashton Kutcher and, possibly, Twitter executive Evan Williams.

Pirate Bay Loses A Lawsuit: Court jails Pirate Bay founders

Swedish court sentences four co-founders of notorious download site The Pirate Bay to a year in jail and a $3.6m fine.

Despite the founders of The Pirate Bay saying they thought a not guilty verdict would be handed down, the Swedish judge presiding over the Pirate Bay trial felt differently. Pirate Bay administrators Fredrik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg and Peter Sunde were found guilty in the case, along with Carl Lundström, who was accused of funding the five-year-old operation. Each of the four founders are sentenced to one year in prison and fined $905,000 each.
