Polar bear swims 300km, gets shot down
A footage of the first polar bear seen in Iceland in 20 years being shot dead by police has been posted online.
The boar, an adult male weighing around 250kg, was presumed to have swum some 300km from Greenland or from a distant chunk of Arctic ice to Skagafjordur in northern Iceland.
It was planned to sedate the animal and move it back to Greenland but the police decided it was safest to kill the bear immediately.
"There was fog up in the hills and we took the decision to kill the bear before it could disappear into the fog”, said police spokesman Petur Bjornsson.
Caution graphic footage: A video of the polar bear's death was posted on the internt by a news channel.
Environment Minister Thorunn Sveinbjarnardottir gave the green light for police to shoot the bear because the correct tranquiliser was not available in Iceland and would not be flown in for a day, Icelandic news channel Visir.is reported.
However, a veterinarian said he had the drugs available in his car. He also criticised police for not closing a mountain road where people congregated after hearing news of the bear, the Associated Press reported.
Polar bears were recently listed as a threated species by the US because its Arctic sea ice habitat is melting due to climate change.
US government scientists have predicted that two-thirds of the polar bear population of 25,000 could disappear by 2050.

Here is a shocking question. Where is the fog?
Lets face it, they killed the bear because it was simple and they wanted to pose with it. That they accomplished.
NotASheep: Have you been to Iceland? The fog in the highlands get very thick very fast. You wouldn't wanna be chasing a polar bear when you can only see 5 meters in front of you.
Although im not happy that they killed it, it was spotted close to a town, and people would have been pretty upset if it had attacked a small child for instance.
they knew the bear was there. they came in with a plan to sedate it. did you see that guy in a hunting jacket? they came to kill it. for a nice big rug.
Good job, good story. keep on more news and articles here
This is starting to worry me. This is not the first case. As far as I remember there were several other cases some years ago, but we haven't heard anything since then. Maybe these specialized organizations should do something in this way, but for real, not only words!
I would like to kill the people who killed it!!
The poor bear was trying to find a right climent because of global warming.
At least sedate it and move the bear back to where he wont hurt anyone!! Imagine how painful, the dying bear was in!!
What is wrong!!!!!!!!
And they are the one's complaining about losing the polar bears!!!
UUGUGUGUGHHH
