Nepali citizens protest after a French News network AFP calls "Britain, Nepal's former colonial ruler".

Nepalese citizens also known as the Gurkhas or Gorkhali are famous for their bravery. CJReport’s co-founder Prameya Bhandari, who is from Nepal says Nepalese are proud of their country’s independence and sovereignty. He said he was really hurt by story on Google News by AFP that says Nepal was once Britain’s colony.

The story reads – Britain, Nepal's former colonial ruler, sent its congratulations after the assembly's first session.

Foreign Office Minister Mark Malloch Brown called it "another step toward the democratic and stable future that the people of Nepal justly deserve."

The original story can be found here.

Blogger Umesh Shrestha noticed the AFP news story and blogged about it on Mysansar.com. He says although Nepal has never been under foreign rule, although its politicians appear to be.

Nepali politics is highly influenced by India, United States and China. Recently India played a key role in the political change. Chine openly pressured Nepal to ban the Tibetan asylum's right to protest, and had Mount Everest lockdown for the Olympic torch.

Although Nepal fought a war with the British East India Company and lost 1/3 of its territory Britain was not able to occupy it. Nepal was Never Britian's colony. British officers are said to have been very impressed by the Brave and patriotic Nepalese.

Blogger Shrestha has called all of his readers to notify AFP of the mistake and have the story corrected.

It is an utterly irresponsible statmement. Whosoever did it should be liable for what he/she wrote against a sovereign country. And, what particularly saddens me is that Gurkhas from Nepal fought the world war II and what they gave their lives for included Franch as well while fighting alongside with them in freeing them from German Army Occupation during the war then. So, how some one could intereprete the matter in such a manner in the historic moment of Constiunency Assembly in Nepal. He/she should publicly apologise to Nepalese people and Gurkhas who fought alongside with them as their brothers.

It is not totally correct, but partialy it is true. Rana rule was continued for 104 years just because of the blessing of British. Like now Girija getting blessing from Indian government (specially Congress Party of India). Although he and his party lost the election but he is not resigning because of the Indian government blessing.

It's an insult to Nepal and Nepalese. What do they think of themselves? They are pretending to know everything about the history of Nepal and know nothing or they are just neive. How can such a responsible media can mention that Nepal was a British colony?I remember some years ago Indian actress Madhuri said Nepal as a part or state of India. This is exactly the same with AFP. Well, we admit that our country is tiny in the globe but we are proud that we were not colonised, never.

The fact is that the world does not know much about our country and their interest is not linked to it.It might be because we could not develop our country well and could not participate in the economic and other technological involvements in the world markets.

All we need is to be able to compete in the world market and try to drive the attention of the world by our deeds. Then automatically the would will know about our country and us.
